Have you seen the direct to DVD sequel to Pocahontas? The racism is blatant and appalling.
I'm so fascinated by the princess stuff from a cultural studies perspective: it's a fascinating exercise on Disney's part in trying to get people to read texts from a perspective that just isn't supported by the content of the text itself, as opposed to building your merchandise around your audience's most likely understanding of the text.

This is such an amazing statement. I agree that I'd love to see the princesses simply match their film characters. I like Rapunzel, Tiana, and Merida -- but they look nothing like their film versions. (Don't get me started on Pocahontas -- wtf??)

I am so happy to have read this... yet so sad because I cannot have the freedom to quit. I am almost done with my MA and with only 4 months to go... I cannot pull the plug. I can't get the job I want without the degree. I hate this stress. I've gained weight and have terrible bouts of sadness and anxiety. I crave that freedom so badly. I literally feel like I'm dragging my feet. Your post has given me a silver lining though - the feeling I'll have when it's all done! Just taking it one day (and sleepless night) at time.

Thanks :)
D is named for my grandmother, so we talk about her often, but this conversation was really the first time D had put together all those pieces about death and grief and my weird secular explanation of heaven-- even before you toss in Helen Keller and the raccoons, it's a lot for a kid to process.

Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi) and Fun Home (Alison Bechdel, of Dykes to Watch Out For) are both INCREDIBLE. Some elements of the story lines would not be age appropriate for Robin, but she could definitely look at the images and talk with you about some of the key pieces of the story lines-- Satrapis frustration at having to veil after the revolution is hilariously illustrated, and her images of loneliness are striking and so gorgeously rendered I bet Robin would understand the themes, even if she doesnt know who Karl Marx is. And I bet Bechdels struggle with gender expression would be accessible and totally interesting to Robin.
And as a bonus, you can watch YouTube videos of both of them drawing and talking about their process- my students LOVED that. Bechdel draws in layers- it blew my mind how complex the process of assembling a single panel is.
And yes, I love the idea of print as a door into the complex adult world without the WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SEX AND DEATH AND MARX AS PARENT AND CHILD element.

All my girls LOVE this graphic novel about a middle school girl and her adventures in orthodontia. The bigger two (9 & 6) brought it home from the school library so often I finally bought a copy. My 4 year old loves it too.
